2010 Annual Meeting of the American Society for Ethnohistory,
Ottawa, Ontario, Canada, Lord Elgin Hotel, 13-17 October 2010

TRAVEL INFORMATION

Travel Information: The Lord Elgin Hotel is located at 100 Elgin Street, Ottawa, Ontario, in the city’s downtown core. Room blocks will be held until13 September 2010. See http://www.lordelginhotel.ca/ for more details and use “ethnohistory” as the booking code.

Airport: Those flying will arrive at the Ottawa International Airport (YOW). For those coming from the United States, Air Canada, American Airlines, Continental Express, Delta/Northwest, United Airlines and US Airways have direct flights from Boston, New York La Guardia, Washington DC (Reagan and Dulles), Chicago, Detroit, Newark, Denver and Philadelphia. Canadian travelers can use Air Canada, Westjet and Porter Air from various departure cities.

The Ottawa Airport is served by taxis and the YOW Airporter shuttle. A taxi ride from the airport to the Lord Elgin costs $30-40 Canadian. Reserve the shuttle by calling YOW Airporter at (613) 260-2359 or on the website, www.yowshuttle.com Tickets are $15 one way, $25 roundtrip, all in Canadian dollars.

AMTRAK and VIA Rail: One can get to Ottawa by train from some American cities. Amtrak links to Montreal from Albany and New York City on the Adirondack Route. You will have to transfer at Montreal to Via Rail. Amtrak also links to Toronto from New York City on the Maple Leaf Route; you will have to transfer to VIA Rail at Toronto. Parking: The Lord Elgin Hotel offers valet parking for $23 Canadian daily.

Driving from New York State: To drive to Ottawa from New York State, take I-81 North from Syracuse, NY, and cross the border at the Thousand Islands entry point north of Watertown, NY. Please recall that you will need your American passport to enter Canada and to re-enter the United States. After entering Canada, take the east bound Highway 401 for about an hour before exiting to Highway 416. After approximately 80 kms (50 miles), take Highway 417 eastbound to downtown Ottawa (about 15-20 minutes). Take the Metcalfe Street exit and drive north until Slater Street. Turn right, proceed a few blocks to Elgin Street and turn right again. The hotel will be on your right almost immediately.

 

Additional Hotels

Downtown Ottawa has numerous hotels. But you should reserve early as hotel rooms in Ottawa can be scarce if Canada’s Parliament is sitting in October.
